King of Kings Lutheran

Quilting Ministry

You see that (her) faith and (her) actions were working together, and (her) faith was made complete by what (she) did.

James 2:22

The first Saturday of each month, there is a flurry of activity in the narthex area at King of Kings. Tables are set up for sandwiching the layers of a quilt, tying a sandwiched quilt, and also piecing the quilt tops or backs. More important than the activity to complete these quilts are the intended recipients and how they will cherish them.

Over 400 children arrive at Safe House every year with little but the clothes on their backs. Upon arrival, they will receive a twin-sized quilt to cover their bed and take with them when they leave. Having been abused, or having seen the abuse of a family member, these children deserve whatever comfort we can supply. That is why we gather bright and early, welcoming all who enter the door, and why the fellowship is so rewarding.

When we first started, Karen Hacker and Camie Roper were the sole suppliers of our quilt tops. Even after leaving, Karen furnished our group with colorful creations. More recently, several members have taken a step out of their comfort zone to bind quilts, make quilt tops or backs, and tie quilts during the weeks between monthly quilt days. Everyone participates at the level at which they are most comfortable.

“Entry level skills” are a desire to help or a desire to  enjoy the warm fellowship; an ability to tie square knots is optional. “Promotion” is self-initiated and can include shopping trips to replenish supplies or learning to bind and piece.

This year, we had a generous donation from our local branch of Thrivent. This enabled us to concentrate on production and we will have many quilts to present to the  Greater Ann Arbor Quilt Guild in November. Our group formed because of a desire to support the Quilt Guild’s efforts in supplying the children with a feeling of warmth and comfort. Our 2004 production has been our largest yet.

You will have an opportunity to see all of the quilts we have completed at the Quilt Show and Craft Sale on October 16th. We would love to see you before that, on October 2nd, our next quilt day. We start at 9:00 sharp and welcome you any time during the work period that ends promptly at 12:00. Whatever time you can volunteer is time well spent.
